PE2011 after thought

Although this is kinda delayed, I'm sad that Tan Cheng Bock lost the presidential elections and I'm disappointed that there were so many ignorant singaporeans out that.

During the GE2011, when u hear from people that they are not following the political scene, nevermind, still can close one eye. After all, there were so many parties to remember, it can get confusing for those with small brains, no?

But hello, this PE2011 has only four candidates. FOUR!! How hard is it to follow??

I admit, when it first started and somebody asked who was my choice, I said Tony Tan. Why? It was the only familiar, prominent name I knew. Who were the rest? Don't care la, just vote and get it over and done with. But one day, I thought hey, just 4 candidates nia, let's just pick up the papers and read about all 4. And that was how I found out Tan Cheng Bock was my former GRC. Yes i was clueless and ignorant too, but i repent.

And upon talking to my dad, i realized he was a dedicated man who followed up religiously with requests and kept to his promises. My dad met both him and Tony Tan before and his impression of Tony Tan was "stuck up", "did not even bother taking time to talk to the people" and "walked off immediately after the session was over." Whereas Tan Cheng Bock, at all sessions, took the time to talk to the people. And i meant at all times, not just nearing the elections.

Of cos with elections going on, there are plenty of photos of candidates shaking hands and talking to the people. As they say, wayang only what. But what you see of Tan Cheng Bock is what you get. He was truly genuine. And coming from my line of work, i knew he was a doctor who truly cared for him patients and never overcharge, in fact, proving free consultations to the poor or the elderly who could not afford.

Which comes to my point. I'm irritated when i hear the people who voted for Tony Tan was because:

1. They have no clue who the rest of the candidates are and have only heard of TT

2. They are supporters of PAP and link TT to PAP, but are clueless that Tan Cheng Bock was also a member of the PAP till he quit in may to run the PE. Just because he was never the deputy PM, people were less familiar with him.

Or:

3. They support Tan Jee Say for the sake of showing their anti-PAP spirit. And since he was one of those in the running for the workers party earlier on this year during the GE, what better way to show their support for opposition than to vote for him?

Tan Cheng Bock ran his campaign as independent-minded in order to reach out to all. Lame attempt to get votes from both parties? I beg to differ. As I quote him: Singaporeans have different opinions, but they should not let this difference in opinions divide them.

As we can see from these elections, the divide between the PAP supporters and anti PAPians is becoming increasingly glaring. What we need now is of a figure to unify and reach out to all.

And honestly as I look through facebook after the results were officially out, I see many airing their disappointment and disbelief when Tan Cheng Bock lost.

But not once did I see a single comment or status rejoicing the win of TT.

What does this mean?

Oh well.

I guess we have no choice but to be ruled by Mr KFC for the next 6 years.

Who can possibly not love this old man??
